Table of Contents Zeiss Ikon was formed by Zeiss in 1926 to rescue the German optical industry from the economic shambles following the First World War. It brought together some of the most famous names in German camera manufacture. In the next thirteen years to 1939 Zeiss Ikon introduced a series of innovative new camera models, in both medium and 35mm formats, of outstanding quality. This book tells the story of the resurrection of Zeiss Ikon following the virtual destruction of its facilities and blueprints during the Second World War. It covers the division between East and West Germany, the separate development of the two parts, the removal of plant to Russia which led to a third strand of camera development from original Zeiss designs, the amalgamation with Voigtlander, the doomed attempt to cater for the whole market from the popular to the professional, and the final withdrawal from camera production in the face of Japanese competition. All the camera models from this period are described or listed, in most cases illustrated, including Voigtlander models after the union with Zeiss and the Zeiss derived cameras made in the Soviet Union. Three chapters are devoted to the Contarex system, that ultimate pinnacle of Zeiss Ikon achievement in state-of-the-art camera design, excellence and quality.
