Description
Nikon SF-210 Bulk Slide Feeder AccessoryFor Nikon LS-2000, LS-4000 and LS-5000 Film ScannersI buy, sell, service, refurbish and resell several models of Nikon film scanners (see my "other auctions", including closed auctions, and my feedback, although many of my transactions are not on E-Bay). Like many of my items, this one has a "story" to it, so be sure to read the whole description. This item is an SF-210 Bulk slide feeder accessory for a Nikon LS-2000, LS-4000 or LS-5000 film scanner. It takes a stack of up to about 50 slides and allows them to be fed all at once without human intervention. It's the only way to go if you have to scan a large number of slides, since you can let slides scan while you do other things. But actually this particular unit started life as an SF-200(S), an earlier version of this feeder, and it was converted to an SF-210 by changing all of the parts that are different between the two models (brand new, Nikon factory parts were used). There are three variants of this automatic bulk slide feeder:The SF-200 was the original version that came out for the LS-2000The SF-200(S) was a later version of the SF-200 that came out for the LS-4000The SF-210 is the current version that came out for the LS-5000The SF-200 and the SF-200(S) are identical except for the color of the plastic. The SF-200 is beige to match the LS-2000, while the SF-200(S) is molded in light gray plastic (Nikon calls it "silver" and adds an (S) suffix to the model number) to match the LS-4000). The SF-210 is also molded from gray plastic the same color as the SF-200(S).Both the SF-200 and the SF-200(S) (hereafter referred to just as the SF-200) have a reputation for frequent jams, and if you search the Internet, you will find a LOT of references to this, as well as a dozen or so "tricks" involving things like cardboard, batteries, rubber bands, paper clips, etc., to improve their jam reliability. When the LS-5000 was introduced, Nikon made some changes to the feeder in an attempt to improve the jam reliability, and introduced the revised feeder as the SF-210. Basically, many of the Internet "jury rig" fixes noticed that the "slide gate" through which the slides passed when being fed was too wide, indeed that it was wide enough to allow two slides to go through it at once, causing a jam. Many of the "jury rig" fixes basically added a "shim" to narrow the gate opening, and in the SF-210, what Nikon did was to introduce a nice, user-adjustable gate width that could be varied simply by turning a knob that moved a metal plate either in towards the feeder (narrowing the feed gate for thinner slides) or out, away from it (opening the gate for thicker slides). What you will see (looking at the photos of the SF-210) is two plates side by side. The left plate is metal and is movable by turning a knob below the slide magazine (visible in the photos) while the right plate is the stationary plastic plate. In the SF-200(S) photo (the photo of this unit before the modification), there is only the stationary plastic plate. This is the only difference between the SF-210 and the SF-200. In other regards they are the same, and any of the 3 models can be used with any of the three scanners (LS-2000, LS-4000 or LS-5000). There are no electronics or microprocessors or much else of significance in these feeders, just a motor, a few sensor switches, and the actual mechanical mechanism. The software and scanner are, in fact, unaware of which exact variant of the feeder is inserted into the scanner.[Note about this conversion: While SF-200's (molded in the original beige plastic) can be converted, the parts required only exist in the gray plastic of the SF-210. Thus conversion of an SF-200 (non "(S)" version) to an SF-210 is possible, but the resultant feeder has a "two-tone" color scheme.] [Please note, I am selling this one unit; I am NOT seeking conversion business !! I converted this unit to see if it was possible. It is, but the parts are expensive enough that in my opinion it's not economically feasible.]The first five photos show the converted slide feeder; the last photo was taken before the conversion, and allows you to compare the SF-210 with it's adjustable gate feed width with the previous SF-200 model that had a fixed, non-adjustable gate width. This auction also includes a tiny accessory attachment that originally came with all of the slide feeders but that most users have lost, it can be optionally inserted into the slide feeder to improve jam performance with some types of slide mounts. [Note that all of these feeders, even the SF-210, still have problems with some cardboard slide mounts (due to excessive friction between adjacent slides) and also with warped, bent or other slides that are not flat, or that have too much friction between adjacent slides in a stack, or that fall outside the specifications for the SLIDES in any way.]Please note that since the model and serial number label was on one of the plastic parts that was replaced, this unit does not have ANY model or serial number label. With the exception of the parts that were replaced, this was a used unit. It's cosmetic condition is very good, but there is some yellowing of the plastic. This unit is guaranteed to be in working order as a normal SF-210 slide feeder. However, as noted above, while the SF-210 is a significant improvement over the SF-200, all of these feeders still have some problems reliably feeding some types of slides.Sales to US only, please. Shipping is $15. Payment by money order, check (item will be held for check to clear, can be up to 3 weeks) or Pay-Pal. Thank you for your interest in my auction.
