Please call George Green at our Los Angeles store with any questions regarding this auction at 323-938-2420 x1293 and he is there Tuesday-Saturday 9-430 California time. This is a beautiful collectable Stereo Nikkor 3.5cm f/3.5 Super rare outfit. Lens ser.No.241931. Prism ser. no.679168. Hood, filter and Nikon stereo finder in leather case are included. Lens is clear and no scratches, fungus, and separation.Condition is EX++, very minor wear, no dent and fully functional condition. First announced in May 1956 but not available until December 1956, the Stereo-Nikkor was listed in Nikon price sheets as late as October 1961. Although this is a fairly long period its production only totaled about 170 units! Therefore, based on quantity made, the Stereo-Nikkor would rank as the rarest of all production RF Nikkors. Mounted only in a chrome barrel with a black face, it consists of two matched 35mm f3.5 lenses each with an acceptance angle of 45.5 degrees. The effective separation of the two optical centers is 18mm and septum prevents image overlap on the two stereo frames, each 17x24mm, which fill the standard 24x36 frame. It couples with the Nikon rangefinder from 3ft to infinity like the regular RF lenses. Unique to this lens is a bayonet-mounted 40.5mm haze filter supplied as regular equipment and a bayonet-mounted hood, which was an option at a cost of $8.50. Also standard was a Stereo-Prism, which increases the effective lens separation to 80mm for use from 10ft to infinity. The prism uses total internal reflection rather than mirrored surfaces for a bright, undistorted image, and bayoneted to the prime lens. The lens by itself produces an Ortho-stereoscopic image from 3ft to 10ft, although it could be used to infinity, but the stereo effect would be reduced. Beyond 10ft the Stereo-Prism was used to maintain correct stereo imaging. The kit also included a 35mm black bright-line finder with the proper 17x24mm vertical frame line for correct composition, and the entire outfit was supplied in a fitted leather case. The only other option besides the lens hood was a Nikon-made transposing Stereo-Viewer, which took standard 2x2 cardboard mount and cost $25.00. Although the author has not been able to obtain the optical formula for this lens it can be assumed that it is probably identical to that used for the standard 35mm f3.5 Nikkor. Recorded serial numbers run from about No. 241800 to approximately No.242100, gaps do exist. The actual production was 170 unit but not all were sold. Because of Japanese tax laws, which put a value on inventory, 28 Stereo-Nikkor were actually destroyed in the presence of the taxman. It is rumored that this was done with a hammer! If this did occur 142 Stereo-Nikkors were sold to the public. Modeled after the Leitz Stemar unit, the Stereo-Nikkor does not break new ground in stereo lens design, but does represent the only attempt at an interchangeable stereo objective for a rangefinder camera ever made besides those from Leitz and Zeiss.
