Calypso Phot Original U/W 35mm Camera Pre-Nikonos Start Price USD 999.00 Current Price USD 12,100.00 Time Left - Bid Count 13 Buy It Now Price - Reserve Price - Start Time Sunday, November 16, 2008 End Time Sunday, November 23, 2008 Location Fort Myers, Florida See more about ' Calypso Phot Original U/W 35mm Camera Pre-Nikonos' Description CALYPSO PHOT ~~ Original U/W 35MM Camera – Pre-Nikonos   This camera is NEW, never used in the original box!  It is over 45 years old.  The shutter fires smoothly and there are no marks on this SCARCE find!  I have never heard of another in this RARE – unused – condition.  The box has some minor damage from silverfish since it has been stored all this time.   EVERYTHING IS ORIGINAL AND NEVER USED   The camera has its’ original strap, original box, COMPLETE original manual, and original shipping box.   There are many variations of the Calypso U/W 35MM Camera.  This one has the script name on the bottom front, with the original wave mark after it.  “Made in France” is imprinted on the back top of the camera with the serial number (5100) engraved on the flash shoe.  The lens is the standard for Calypso Som Berthiot Flor 35mm f3.5.  This is the FIRST version with the 1/1000 speed on the shutter dial.    The famous French deep-sea diver and film maker Jean-Yves Cousteau, failed to construct a satisfying underwater camera.  The Belgian--but born in France – aviation engineer Jean de Wouters d'Oplinter, however, succeeded in a camera construction that could stand the water pressure to a depth of at least 60 meters.  He gave that camera the name of Cousteau's research vessel:  Calypso.  The production of the camera was taken over by a French company named La Spirotechnique in Levallios-Perret (France).  Nikon Corporation took over the production in 1963 and started the production series of underwater cameras, better known as Nikonos.  The original Calypso camera was fitted with lenses of the French lens maker Berthiot as seen in this auction.
