Often the original colours will simply fade due to the different emulsions and developing techniques used at the time. Film is adversely affected by light, temperature, relative humidity and of course the age of the film. In many cases mildew and fungus can eat into the emulsion ruining the image information. These are memories that should not be lost simply due to neglect. In combination with a good quality projector and a Video or MiniDV camera, (these are not included in this listing) the CINE-TRANZ offers an inexpensive way to convert both 8mm and 16mm film into a digital format that can be edited on your home computer, then later burned to DVD. Performing your own transfers gives you complete control on editing allowing you to remove all the unwanted sections of the film. When sending to a commercial transfer company you generally pay for all the film being transferred even though most you will want to discard. CINE-TRANZ Film to Video Transfer Unit CINE-TRANZ is one of the finest quality consumer grade film-to-video transfer units available anywhere in the world. Made in Australia, the CINE-TRANZ incorporates the highest quality face coated optical mirror to transfer a projected image onto a high-density viewing screen, offering the best possible image quality on a portable device. While not quite producing the quality of professional transfer equipment the Cine-Tranz produces image quality exceeding that produced by all of the portable transfer boxes that we have tested. High Quality Optical Mirror Photographic quality face coated optical mirrors have the silver coating on the face of the glass, producing a distortion free image which is essential for high quality image transfer. The screen material is specially formulated for backlit image applications where grain must be kept to a minimum. The CINE-TRANZ has been manufactured using the finest materials, including an aluminium frame. The mirror is shipped with the factory applied plastic film to protect the sensitive reflective surface coating from scuffing or scratching. Instructions are included on how to care for the mirror once the protective coating has been removed and also how to set up the unit for quality film to video transfer. Image Quality Transfer systems developed in the 1980's did not include the high quality photographic materials available today. The distribution of light is evenly spread across the entire screen without the dark outer perimeter often displayed with older transfer boxes. Also, there is no central hot spot commonly seen in these early devices, caused by the intensity of the projector lamp in the center of the screen. This is a picture of me taken by my father when I was just 6 years old using his standard 8mm Eumig cine camera. The movies taken at that time are priceless to me and I have been able to convert all of these wonderful memories to DVD using the CINE-TRANZ. I can now pass these amazing memories on for the enjoyment of my children and grandchildren. We have included the Cine-Tranz transfer results with those obtained using a standard commercially available Tranfer Box to compare image quality. The movie clips were transferred to the computer where a single frame has been captured and reproduced below. The original PAL size images have only been trimmed to fit into our presentation. Depending upon the original condition of your film and quality of your projector and camera, results achieved may differ from the examples shown below. We found the Cine-Tranz to display a tight-grained image, with even distribution of light throughout the entire screen. The use of a white screen displays slightly richer colours. Image quality is slightly softer than that achieved by other etched glass screens transfer boxes. Many of the early 1980~1990 transfer kits, used a heavy grain plastic or etched glass screen, giving a coarse grainy background. There are 100's of different makes and model on the market, all delivering varying degrees of image quality. COMPARISON Many of the older second hand transfer boxes often have scuffmarks on the display screen from over vigorous cleaning that can show up on your captured video. The mirrors can also develop artifacts or crazing over time that will adversely affect the transfer quality. Most transfer boxes are now more than 20 years old and will not compare with the quality of today's photographic materials. All mirror/screen type transfer systems will display varying levels of background grain, due to the very nature of the screen material being used. We use screen material specially formulated for backlit projection to reduce background grain. To eliminate the grain entirely, film capture must be performed directly off the film as it passes through the projector gate, eliminating the screen altogether. This type of transfer is performed using expensive scanning equipment often found in commercial film studios and TV stations for broadcast quality video. The Cine-Tranz will not compare with this professional transfer process and is not designed to produce this level of professional quality. For the price however, we think the Cine-Tranz will offer excellent results for all home based transfer needs and can save many hundreds of dollars often charged for commercial film conversions. Film Transfer Tutorial Included with this purchase is a one hour tutorial on DVD covering all aspects of transferring your film to a digital format. Also covered is important information on how to purchase a second hand projector and how to maintain your projection equipment for reliable operation.
